Shape the sound, on YouTube or any site

Remove the bass, reduce the voice or change the key of whatever is playing.

Written for Key Detector 2.0. Chords, charts and practice sequences are beta: check them by ear. Images use simulated data; they illustrate the interface and are not evidence of audio accuracy. The Chrome Web Store may still be serving an earlier version for a few days after release.

Before you start

Pro/trial. YouTube, any site that plays music in Chrome, or the Player.

Steps

  1. On YouTube, open Studio. Open Sound and pick a preset: No bass, More bass, Clear voice, Bright or Warm.
  2. Reduce vocals lowers what sits in the centre of a stereo mix, usually the lead voice. Other centred instruments drop too.
  3. Open Equalizer for the five bands, and use Compare with the original sound to hear the difference without losing your settings.
  4. More speed options adds 2× to 4× and a tape effect that changes the key with the speed.
  5. On another site (Spotify Web, SoundCloud, Bandcamp…), open Studio and choose Turn on for this tab. Transpose, Fine tune and Sound then act on that tab. Change the speed in the site’s own player.

Expected result

The Sound row shows what is active, and Reset all returns to the original.

If it does not work

Any-site mode keeps working while the Key Detector window or the side panel stays open. If the tab cannot be connected, play the music and try again; Chrome pages and the Web Store cannot be captured.

Access

Changing the key on any site is free; the sound tools are Pro/trial.
