How to use it

Online chromatic tuner

  1. Allow the microphone

Your browser asks once. The sound stays on your device: nothing is recorded or sent.

  2. Play one note

Pluck one string or sing one note and let it ring. Its name appears in the middle of the dial.

  3. Turn until it’s green

Left of centre the note is flat, so tighten the string. Right of centre it is sharp, so loosen it.

Standard tunings

Guitar, from the thickest string: E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4. Bass: E1 A1 D2 G2. Ukulele: G4 C4 E4 A4. Violin: G3 D4 A4 E5.

Most music is tuned to A = 440 Hz. Some orchestras use 442 or 443, and some recordings sit a little off. The analyzer tells you the tuning of a recording so you can match it here.

FAQ

Questions

Is anything recorded?

No. The tuner reads the microphone inside your browser, never sends the sound anywhere and closes the microphone when you stop or leave the page.

Why doesn’t it detect my note?

Play one note at a time, close to the microphone, and let it ring. Chords and noisy rooms confuse any tuner.

Can I tune to 432 Hz?

Yes. Change the reference under the dial and the note and the needle use it straight away.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in Chrome and Safari on Android and iPhone. The first time, allow the microphone in the browser’s prompt.
